What is The Art Conspiracy?

The Art Conspiracy is a rapidly growing community of Painters, Photographers, Sculptors, Musicians, Writers, Programmers, etc. It is a place to share your talents with the world and discuss topics with like-minded individuals.

What are the benefits of membership?

If you're an established artist, The Art Conspiracy is perfect for you to keep in touch with admirers of your work.

Your free account gives you the ability to post to all 5 Conspiracies (Eye, Sound, Word, Physical, and Mind),

Ok, I just joined, how do I get started building my gallery?

Once you've logged on, you will be brought to your control panel which you can access at any point on the site by clicking the link found in the top right corner of The Art Conspiracy.

In the control panel you will find a link called "Upload/Manage Your Gallery". Click here to begin uploading your gallery.

At this point you choose which gallery you're going to build. You can create any or all of them.

The Eye Gallery is where to store your portfolio of Visual Arts including Painting, Photography, Digital Art, Drawing, Graphic Design, Print Design, and more.

The Word Gallery is for Authors, Poets, Lyricists, Playwrites, Screenplays, Journalists, and more to post thier written works and benefit from visitor feedback.

The Physical Gallery is an online gallery of your Clothing, Dolls/Figurines, Sculpture, Weaving, Textiles, Accessories, and other craftsmanship talents.

The Sound Gallery is used for getting your band more exposure, or put up your Spoken Word for all to hear, or any of your art that requires ears to appreciate.

The Mind Gallery is to show off your skills in HTML, Flash, Java, VBScript, and other electronic mediums. If you have any kind of web portfolio, link it here.

I don't like the way Art Conspiracy looks, can I use different colors/fonts for my gallery?

Sure thing! Once you've logged on, you will be brought to your control panel which you can access at any point on the site by clicking the link found in the top right corner of The Art Conspiracy.

In the control panel you will find a link called "Gallery Preferences ". Click it.

As you can see, on this page, we give you access to your gallery's HTML stylesheet. You can use this to manipulate the look of your gallery. If you don't know how to edit a stylesheet, we also include links to tutorials on this page, as well as a handy color guide. We've also included a guide to changing the look of Art Conspiracy specifically, which you can see here. In the future we may create a more user friendly interface but for now giving you access to the style sheet technically and used properlly gives you more freedom over your gallery. Also judging from other community websites similar to our own, saavy users use all sorts of tricks to manipulate thier profile's style sheet, by doing this we can at least make sure people do it right.

I don't want people to be taken straight to my user profile when they click on a link to my Art Conspiracy Gallery. I want them to go straight to my photography/music/poetry/etc...is this possible?

Yep! Once you've logged on, you will be brought to your control panel which you can access at any point on the site by clicking the link found in the top right corner of The Art Conspiracy.

In the control panel you will find a link called "Gallery Preferences ". Click it.

The first option you'll see is a select box that lets you choose which section of your profile a user will be taken to by default.

Why did you remove the painting I made of George Bush's vivisected penis being blessed by the Virgin Mary? Thats my art dude, you have no right to censor me! This is so not punk!

Actually I do have the right to censor you. Do not confuse The Art Conspiracy with your private property. Also, do not take it personally. And the beautiful thing is, it works both ways, you can leave the site if you disagree with any of our policies, or not join in the first place. Technically speaking, The Art Conspiracy is a public community and as such it is incumbent upon all of us, but most especially myself to make it an enjoyable and RESPECTFUL experience for both members and public visitors. Familiarize yourself with the acceptable use policy and excercise your best judgement, as well over 8,000 other members have proven able to do. All in all, The Art Conspiracy tends to be lenient and respectful of everyone's art except in extreme cases. Any removal of gallery items is certainly not a personal attack on your artistic merit.

Also, we are not a "punk" site. We have members and visitors of all creeds and races and to change policy for the sake of any social clique or trend would be elitist and against the spirit of The Art Conspiracy.

If theres anything you want to submit to Art Conspiracy or anything already in your gallery that you're not sure of, please feel welcome to open a dialogue with the webmaster.

I uploaded my gallery but it appears to be broken, or gallery items appear as blank spaces, same goes for my bio pics...whats wrong?

There are various reasons this could be. Here's the 3 most likely reasons:

  1. For old Art Conspiracy items, when we used to allow off-site image linking, The URL you have linked to maybe points to an image hosted on a server that does not allow the image to be viewed on external web sites. This is especially common of files that are hosted on Geocities, Yahoo, or Xoom. Your best Solution is to upload your image to our server and let us host it for you.
  2. The image you uploaded has spaces or invalid characters in its filename. Try renaming your image before uploading it (for example: a file called "my picture!.jpg" should be renamed to "mypicture.jpg". You may notice that images with spaces in their filename will work in Internet Explorer, but not Netscape. In most cases, the Image Manager will not allow you to upload images in this format anyway.
  3. The image you uploaded was corrupted during transfer. Possibly from prematurely canceling the transfer. Try re-uploading your image. If it is a large image, it may take a few minutes to upload, so be patient.

Certain pieces in my gallery appear to have no preview thumbnail, but when I click through to view the full-sized piece, it appears fine, same goes for my bio pics. what's up with that?

In some rare cases, the gallery manager does not properly create your thumbnail preview images, which The Art Conspiracy uses to display your galleries faster. You can use the "repair broken thumbnails" button to fix this. If that doesn't work, try removing and adding your gallery item again.

The songs I've uploaded to my sound gallery play back at high speeds, making me sound like The Chipmunks (my favorite is Simon), what can I do to fix this?

This is a known bug between Macromedia Flash (the technology behing the mp3 player) and certain MP3 encoding. Commonly this happens if you encode your MP3s using iTunes' auto bit rate feature. Be sure to specify your bit rate. More details are available in this faq, so click here.

What are the benefits of Supporting Membership?

For just $3 a month, there are many. But in a nutshell:

  • Your own POP3 E-mail address (username@artconspiracy.com)
  • Your own URL subdomain (http://username.artconspiracy.com)
  • The ability to place gallery items up for sale or auction, and make back some of the money you have generously given to us
  • Supporting Members appear at the top of all search results
  • All banner ads are instantly removed from your gallery
  • More exposure by having both yourself and your artwork randomly appear in 3 different spots on the homepage
  • The ability to post upcoming events that will also appear on the site's homepage

And I'm always working on more.

But wait, why should I subscribe, you're a .com business, don't you guys have truckloads of $$$?

Actually, that is precisely the reason I don't have the money alone to run The Art Conspiracy. The truth is, The Art Conspiracy is just me in my apartment programming a site for artists, paying for the bandwidth and server out of my own pocket. At the time I write this, I'm on unemployment. Every month for the last 4 years I've consistently taken a large monetary loss to keep the site running. I do so because I believe it will one day succeed with patience and perseverance. Thanks to the supporting member program I don't pay a portion of the server costs, but my costs are still significant. And worse yet, as the site grows, so do the bandwidth bills. Thanks to the supporting members program, the bills have stayed within my budget as the site grows and as long as new supporting members continue to join, things will be fine.

So far supporting member money has also allowed me to upgrade software on the server, as well as create promotional material.

Also, I WILL NEVER USE SUPPORTING MEMBER MONEY FOR ANYTHING BUT THE BETTERMENT OF THE SITE. The only money I will ever consider to be my reward for my hard work is advertising money. If there ever comes a month when Supporting Member money exceeds the server bill, that money will be saved for hardware and software upgrades, promotional materials, and fun things to bring the site into real life by holding get together events and galleries.
